Justification

My family and I went back to Napa for the Christmas and New Year holidays. It was a great trip. We endeavored to see all of our dearly missed friends and family.

We had that one night of debauchery (with a group of friends) that is de rigueur in any visit back to one's stomping grounds. First stop was Angele - great spot - cocktails, wine and some nibbles. Next was Cuvee where they serve wine from casks (barrels) in glasses or carafes. We had a bottle of 2003 Dominus and an '03 Oakville Ranch Cab and then a bottle of Justin's Justification. Then we decided to try some of those cask wines. First one carafe, and then another were sent back to the bar - much to my friends' embarrassment. One of my friends said they'd never be able to show their face in that place again. You see, I have a history of being critical about food and wine. But, in my defense, that is only after 25 years in the business - and a discerning palate. I sent a sample of both wines to the manager who agreed with me. They were oxydized and had lost their fruit. I think the cask thing is cool but problematic. Maybe a little gimmicky. I ordered another bottle of Justification. It was just what I needed...

Memory minus the brain cells

If you have ever spoken to me then I have probably remarked about my lack of memory. I am convinced (and have stated) that, along with my 10-plus-pound-baby, eleven years ago I gave birth to quite a few brain cells - never to be seen (or used) again. I can say, for certain, that menial tasks can be daunting when I can't even remember what it is that I am trying to accomplish... I can, at least, remember my daughter's name. I was worried that I'd be like my mom calling my sisters and I first one name and then the other. Carole, I mean Janet, uh, Denise...
My husband thinks my "glitch" is kinda cute. I am wondering how cute it's going to be when I am testing for the Master Sommelier exam and the examiner asks for a recommendation for his Fois Gras. I don't think, "that sweet wine from France ... comes from the general area of Bordeaux, kinda near Graves ... I can't think of the name...", will instill confidence. It is for this reason that I am over-studying (if this is possible). I want this stuff to roll off of my tongue like the French alphabet. In fact, I'm off to bed with the World Atlas of Wine. Too bad that I am also going blind...
