It's hot as hades here in LA. I was looking forward to going back to BootCamp after a month of lounging around, but it's too damn hot. To console myself, I made the dreamiest margarita I've ever had, completely by accident. Maybe it was just the heat waves frizzing my 'do, but that drink was damn tasty. Regular Jose Cuervo, regular Triple Sec. A container of frozen limeade, a quarter cup of oj, a couple of slices of lime, and ice. All in the blender. Dug my margarita glasses out of the top of the kitchen cabinet, rimmed one with salt, and poured. Heaven.
Our new au pair is from Mexico. She had a little margarita, too, and said "This is a very common drink in Mexico." I said, "I know, but I'm not sure it was invented in Mexico." So then I got curious and turned to my favorite frenemy, Google. The site with the best stories calls itself "Margarita Mavens." I particularly like the one about the girlfriend who hit someone over the head with a whiskey bottle and apparently started the mother of all barfights.
The photo, BTW, is by my friend Frankie Frankeny. She shot it for a cookbook I helped develop for the Junior League of San Diego. It's called California Sol Food, and it has some rockin' margarita recipes in it, if you're interested. And all for a good cause. You can find it on Amazon. (BTW, Frankie recently shot a cookbook called Green Eggs and Ham -- food inspired by Dr. Suess. Wonder if it has any margarita recipes?)
I'm officially declaring myself a Margarita Maven. Bring on the heat, and don't forget the whiskey bottles.
