I was just looking at a Blog today for Moms-to-be that still want a special cocktail - non alcoholic, of course. The site is named Preggatinis - kinda cute, I guess, fun. I don't know - it's growing on me.
Truth is, when I was pregnant so many years ago, I lost all taste for the hard stuff. Couldn't stomach coffee either - until my last month, when I really wanted some wine.
I figured the baby was fully "cooked" so-to-speak. Brain was done - she was big enough - that's for sure - most people thought I was having twins.
So, huge-with-child, I waddled into Mustards Grill one afternoon, to have lunch with my hubby. We used to go to Mustards to see all of our old friends - and enjoy some old favorites. Honestly, I wouldn't even think about going there now.
Back to the story at hand. I ordered my lunch and an ABC flight (anything but Cabernet). I think there was a Zin, a Syrah, probably some Pinot. Since we knew the bartender and the waiter I am sure they poured me a little heavier than the standard 2 ounces per glass. So - here I am, this pregnant woman - out to there - and I have three glasses of red wine in front of me. At lunch time. Well, a woman a couple of tables over could not help herself - she had to intervene - for the child's sake, of course!
She came over to the table to admonish me for imbibing with motherhood looming. (Can you think of a better reason!) I was shocked - and tongue-tied. My husband, however, was not. "Lady", he said, "she may be drinking but, at least she kicked her heroin habit". Needless to say, the nosy woman scurried back to her own table and we continued our lunch uninterrupted.
Drinking during pregnancy is not sanctioned by the greater medical community because of the liability involved. My mom drank Rum and cokes while she was pregnant with me and martinis in the nine months before my brother was born. Other than this propensity towards spewing off at the mouth and that awful tic... I can't think of how it must have affected me.

That husband of yours -- the most chivalrous and wittiest man I know. Congrats on the heroin habit!
