So, I can't help believing that the folks at the WSJ are reading our blog: Why else would they be writing about Papal wine pairings?
Unfortunately, neither Lidia nor Joe Bastianich --the hosts for his upcoming dinners in NYC-- called us for any recommendations regarding what to pour for the pontiff, but they do have a pretty good set of resources to rely on. (Considering they own a winery, some kind of wine-clubby thing run by a bunch of boys, and more than one notable restaurant.)
That being said, we're delighted they resisted the urge to plop a glass of Riesling on the table, and went with Italian wines, although they did include a nice crisp white blend (Bastianich Vespa Bianco) that may help His Holiness re-connect with the wines of the Fatherland.
As for us, we're going to sit at home, watch the Pope on teevee (has anyone else noticed that he sounds just like Klink from Hogan's Heroes?), admire his lovely red shoes, and pop open a bottle of 2006 Flora Springs Barrel-Fermented Chardonnay. Where's it from? Why, Pope Valley, of course.

I fail to understand the selection, except that it is most self serving. The Grand Ayatollah of Absurdistan can have Italian vino served at his pontifical meals back home. Why wouldn't his staff seek out American wines made by notable Catholic producers?

Hi, Tom:
You make a good point. But perhaps they got a good deal on the wine. :) Wonder if they can write it off as a tithe?
